I was talking to myself about filetyping and UTIs (read Ars Techinica review of Tiger) when I decided on a new plan. But of course I can't implement it... Here are my thoughts on filetyping, sorry for the crummy page, produced using a Tex-Edit AppleScript.

Sounds good, ryaxnb, although are you suggesting anything here that Siracusa (SP, oops) has not already covered? At least we know that Apple has moved out of the dark ages of file typing.

Siracusa was great - it totally inspired me. I garnered a lot of info from his review, but he hasn't mentioned much since 10.1 on how truly horrible filetyping still is, as UTIs are only internally used right now.

It seems like Apple is working toward something great in this area, but there is no guarantee that it will ever materialize as a true replacement for filename extensions, given the incremental development strategy that Apple has pursued.
