Trying to solve a little problem here. We have 3 computers, and iMac, an MDD, and an older Graphite G4. All running Panther 10.3.9. The MDD and iMac need to be able to read and write files in programs such as Excel and Dreamweaver among others. The problem is that everything we read from the Graphite Machine comes up as a read-only files and we can't save back to them. We need to be able to read and wite to the files over on the Graphite G4 instead of copying them back and fourth is beginning to be very fustrating. Is this capable in Panther or we gona have to shell out the big bucks for OSX Server just for the one machine.

Where are the files being read from? Could you provide more detail? I'm sure there is a solution that doesn't require OS X Server (OS X Server's permissions scheme is no different than OS X Client's).

Let's see if I can can describe this,
We have a Graphite G4 that we want to make really into just file server. Then we have two other macs that will strickly access files on the Graphite. So this way whomever works on say a website myself or my roommate, both macs will have access to the files on the Graphite system. The problem we seem to be running into is it seems that some programs, Dreamweaver and Excel to be exact, will only open the files up as Read-Only, and in no way will save the files, even if you change the name, back to the Graphite system where they live. Now we can use Photoshop all day long opening up files and saving files on the Graphite system with no problems so far. Could this just be an isolated incident with these two programs we use or could it be something deeper?
Thanks!!

If you aren't having problems editing files in other programs (such as Photoshop), I suppose it could be an issue with these apps.
You might want to use Dreamweaver to publish files via WebDAV or FTP to the Graphite's "Sites" folder (which you can access through a web browser when you enable Apache). This would be an effective work-around.
I'm not sure about Excel. There are a few things you could try, I guess, but I'm not sure whether it would be faster to find the specific problem or just an effective work-around (of which there are probably several).
