Okay, so I already posted this in the Apple support discussions, but nobody there has a clue...maybe you guys are smarter. After installing Tiger on my dual 867 MHz G4, it refuses to dial out. Every time I try, I get the error message 'Could not open communication device'. I've tried all 3 forms of installing, and get the same result every time. I also tried trashing the prefs and reconfiguring it manually with no luck. Obviously, my modem is fine, since I can still dial out under 10.3.9 to post here. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is it related to the DNS issues people are having with routers? Plenty of info on that at Apple discussions?

Mind you, my dial-up worked fine on my imacG3 since I had to use that as my router wasn't working

Pretty sure it's not DNS related...I can't even get a dial tone.

I'm having the same problem and it definitely isn't DNS related. I had to re-install 10.3 to use my modem.

I'm having the same issue on my Powerbook Titanium

The modem script goes right from dialing to connecting without ever actually attemptinga dial, and then I get:

"Could not open communication device'.

I also did an upgrade install, and an archive and install preserving users, and, after zaping pram, removing system configs, etc while on the aple support line, did an archoive and install without preserving user settings, and still no go.

I'm on the road and don't have my old system disks to go back to

If anyone comes up with a fix - please let me know!

Mat

Here's something interesting, apparently the same thing happened with 10.2-

from:
Mac OS X: About the Mac OS X 10.2.2 Update
This software updates Mac OS X 10.2.1 to version 10.2.2.
“Addresses an issue in which some internal Apple modems may fail to respond, displaying a "Could not open the communication device" alert.”

I wish I could post something helpful here. Judging from history, Apple seems to possess a special hatred for modem users. I don't think they sufficiently test the code - we know they definitely have not in the past.

Some Users are having problems when dialing out using their modem. This issue will be fixed in the next update to tiger. Also if you can, send Apple an email because they' are definitely aware of the issue. Maybe they will have a fix or temporary work around for you.
