I've been getting very weird behaviour from my Tiger install - apps crashing randomly (even the iApps, which I always assumed to be rock-solid, at least in my experience). I was basically willing to try anything, so as an easy fix I tried trashing some prefs and it seems to have made things more stable. I mean really noticeably, not just in the "I think it has" way. For example VLC was taking a long time to start and would hang if I tried to enlarge the screen whilst a movie (regular low-ish bitrate) was playing. After trashing the prefs, it loaded in an instant and there was no hanging...I know it might be unlikely that the prefs could have been causing this but, if you are at your wits end and willing to try anything, try that!
I read on these forums that Tiger is using some weird binary format for the prefs now - could it be that perhaps my old prefs were still intact and Tiger was having some trouble reading them? Or is that just silly?
well, whatever the case, nothing has crashed for a while now...*touchwood*
