I did a search and could not find anything.
How do I get that spotlight menubar item out of my menubar? I tried the same method to get other Apple menuitems out and that doesn't work, and I tried the Spotlight preferences in the System Preferences, but no option to turn it off. How do I get rid of this durned thing? I don't necessarily want to turn it off, I just want the menubar item gone.

yes, this is something that ideally I'd like to be able to do in the long term. As 3rd party devs improve on spotlights interface it'd be nice to be able to replace apple's.

Ditto. My menu bar space is limited enough as is, the last thing I need is another menu extra which I can neither move nor remove. At least if it were movable, I'd be able to make it the leftmost item so that it disappears when space is limited, rather than the more important stuff disappearing.

Apple apparently wants it to be a permanent, systemwide fixture. It may have to be hacked out of the system if that is so desired.

Sometimes you need to force such a feature to eliminate the "chicken/egg" problem.

considering the research people have been putting into getting rid of it, did anyone come across a way to keep the whole thing in the menubar ie keep the search rectangle always open in the menu?

It's not too difficult to press command-space before you begin to type. There's no need to keep it open all the time.

That would be a nice option, like the search field in Safari, Mail, etc.. have one for a systemwide search.

pressing command-space changes the keyboard input language (for me, at least)... how does this affect spotlight?
