OK, I wanted to re-install MAC OS X Panther so I inserted Disk 1 into the CD drive, went to system prefrences and set the startup disk to be MAC OS X Panther Disk 1. However, When I restart my computer it does not load the install screen. I have waited up to 10 minutes and the install screen never came up. I am almost positive that if I take the disc out and clean it a little it will work. However, I can not open the CD drive at this point. Is it possible to open the CD drive or change the startup disk?

Note: The farthest I get is to the grayish screen with the apple logo in the middle and the loading circle below it.

Thanks.

If you hold down on the mouse button while starting up, the CD should eject.

A good start would be to not bump your own thread every 20 minutes, and to use the edit button.

You don't have an emergency-eject hole, do you? I don't know if the newer iBooks have them. It's a pain that Apple has removed emergency ejects from their computers... no, Apple, your computers are not absolutely problem-free, sometimes they are necessary.

Another option might be to hold down the option key while starting up. That should let you pick a startup disk.

My iBook has a little hole in the CD drive. If it has that stick a little pin in it and it will eject. Either that or press and hold the power button and see if it reboots better.
