I have problem with Tiger. After some time of normal work it seems that Tiger system partition becomes locked.

When I try to copy any file from other partition on Tiger partition it gives me this message:
You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items?

Moving files on Tiger partition from folder to folder also doesn't work. The error message is:
The Finder cannot complete the operation becouse some data in "Tiger" could not br read or written (Error code -36).

iTunes which is working in background starts to output this error message:
The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-50).

So basically, nothing that should be saved on my boot partition can not be saved. I can't even log out or restart without hard reset.

The Tiger is installed on clean partition formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. I have tried repairing volume in Disk Utility but nothing is reported.

Copying on other partitions works fine. I have try to reinstall Tiger but this thing is happening again.

My config: G4 1.4GHz Digital Audio / 1024MB RAM / Radeon 8500 / 3x120GB HD

I'm experiencing the same issue. It happens to me on my Users share on Tiger server. It keep me from being able to make any changes to my user folder. I'll let you know if I figure anything out.

You might try, because it worked for me when I had a problem like this, is do a search and drag from the search result.

For some reason that worked even when the Finder refused to let me drag/drop from one of its windows on an external drive to folder destinations (internal drive) on the sidebar.

Permissions were correct. The ext. volume had no errors. It just wouldn't do it. Bizarre.

But I did a search and it worked as it should've and I was able to copy from the results window.

I have not seen any pattern to this behavior.

i am sympathetic to security concerns, but locking the volume is ridiculous. Someone should try to reproduce this bug and get a report off to Apple ASAP.

Well it seams that 10.4.1 update have fixed this error. I didn't have any "locks" after applying this update and running Mac for two days now.

Unfortunately, it seems that I have rushed with my conclusion. The damn thing is happening again. I have also tried with different copy of Tiger, and with changing the hard disk, but boot volume again gets locked.
I can only conclude that there is problem with 3rd party software/hardware I have in Mac.

Does anyone can give me any advice how can I catch the problem on my computer (in which logs to look or with which software to monitor problem or something else...).
