[FONT=Georgia]I am not too savvy with power-user tricks on a Mac. Hopefully someone out there can point the way for me.

I have two PowerBooks, a 12 inch and a 15 inch. I have Tiger running on the 15 inch. Now I want to clone the identical setup on a 12 inch. (Presently, the 12 inch PB has been reformatted with the OSX only (10.3.9).)

Is there a fast way to duplicate the 15 inch setup on the 12 inch? Or, do I have to install Tiger and all of the applications yet again on the 12 inch?

Will it work to clone the hard drive from the 15 to th 12? Do I need to purchase another license of Tiger first?

How do I go about cloning the 12 inch?

Sorry for all of the questions. If someone can help, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks in advance.

Purchasing another license for Tiger is only for your conscience.

You'll definitely want to install Tiger but you can use the migration assistant to transfer your settings over. As far as third-party applications, it's better to re-install them from scratch.

I agree about the license ... I'll buy another.

What is the "migration assistant"? Thanks.

What I have done in the past (though it may not be the quickest way) is clone the entire drive, then do an archive & install over the top.

This way you get the benefits of a complete copy of your previous drive plus a fresh install.

are your two 'books' hard drives the exact same size?

Then you can boot the 12" one that you want to copy TO in Target Disk Mode (by holding down the "T" key when you turn it on) - it will then function simply as an external hard drive - and hook it up to your 15".

Then use Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) to back up (clone) your entire drive to the 12".

This will only work if both hard drives are the same size, AFAIK.

I used it just the other day to clone onto a new hard drive, so it will definitely go from smaller (source) to larger (target) as well. Don't know if it will clone from larger to smaller but I have done this with CCC in the past.
