I recently noticed that some favicons are not present in Tiger, yet they appear normally in Panther. An example of a favicon that works in Panther, but not in Tiger: http://my.yahoo.com/

So when I passed the local Apple store yesterday I stopped in to see if this same condition existed on their machines. Sure 'nuf, it does. Being a Saturday, the store was packed, so I did not have an opportunity to talk with the Genius.

To see if I could put things to right, I did the following:

• flushed: ~/Library/Caches folder/Safari/(00-15)
• flushed: ~/Library/Safari/Icons(00-15)
• ran the full Cocktail suite of cache cleaners
• Repaired Permissions
• fsck'd
• Safe Booted

But I remain curious. Does this anomaly exist with every Tiger machine or is it just with the few I happened to test (touch), and what is the cause of such a condition?

I suspect something gets easily corrupted, but I haven't a clue what that might be.

For my Tiger install on a DP 800, I did the Archive & Install. I don't know how Apple did it.

At this point, guesses are encouraged.

Dave Hyatt acknowledged this after Mike Pinkerton (of Camino) bugged him about it.

Thanks Krypton.

Your insight helped relieve a small anxiety of mine. It also prompted me to learn of Dave Hyatt and Mike Pinkerton. Alas, ignorance abounds.

I never did find the reference where Dave Hyatt acknowledges this Safari 2.0 "condition", but still, I am pleased to have learned a bit.

Do you think this is one of the issues that will be addressed in 10.4.1, or is this matter of too little significance?

From: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/pinkerton/

The conversation with hyatt went like this:

Me: Dang, something in Tiger broke some Camino favicons.
Hyatt: Really? How do you know?
Me: Well if you download the favicon and look at it in Preview, it no longer works. We filed the bug on NSImage.
Hyatt: We still use NSImage for favicons in Safari. What's a url?
Me: www.yahoo.com
Hyatt: OMG, you're right. This doesn't work in Safari either.

So when you see 10.4.1 to fix favicons in Safari, you'll know why. It's radar 4102776
