Best way to backup before installing Tiger?

Hi!

I'm about to install Tiger but I want to back up all of my files first.

Is it better to get a program to do a backup that can be burned to DVD, or should I just copy my Home and Applications directories to to a DVD? All I need to backup are the items/folders on my desktop, my Thunderbird mail, my iTunes music and my Safari bookmarks.

If getting a program to backup everything is better, which program do you recommend?

I personally back up by hand but I am also confortable working in the Terminal. Generally speaking, I create a disk image, use ditto to copy things to it, and then burn it. I don't worry about anything other than my data and Firefox's bookmarks (which lives in ~/Library).
