Hey All,

Just got a new 20" iMac G5 today. I can't run .mpkg installers - like the iTunes 4.8 update that came out today - they simply open as folders, revealing the "contents" folder inside. The only weird thing I've installed is Stuffit Expander 9.02 - is this to blame? Even .mpkg installers on disc, like DVD Studio Pro and Final Cut Pro, won't run. I am stumped. Thoughts? Not much I can do if I can't install my Apple Pro Applications. Thanks!

Is the Installer application in your /Applications/Utilities folde r?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Why yes sir it is. It has a generic Application icon - interesting. And lo and behold, launching it and navigating to an mpkg allows me to run the installer. Definitely a workaround - I'll post if the mpkg ability magically returns now. Thanks!

Get Info on one of the .mpkg files and make sure it's set to Open With the Installer. If it's not, change it and then click "Change All..." to make Installer the new default for .mpkg files.

If that doesn't work, my guess would be a corrupted LaunchServices cache. Go to your /Library/Caches folder, and look for any files that look like com.apple.LaunchServices-<numbers>.csstore and delete them all. Then reboot and see if your problem is still there.

I'm happy to report that all is well and back to normal - I replaced the Installer Application with a copy from another Mac running Tiger, and things fixed themselves. Thanks for your help CharlesS! I wonder what broke my Installer Application.
