For some reason, Safari runs really slow on my powerbook. It takes a while for pages to load and I'm sure its not my connection. My PC can process web pages very quickly, but with the powerbook, it seems to lag. It takes several seconds to open a web page or even to just refresh one. If it was a 1-3 second delay, I could live with it, but right now I'm waiting maybe 3-6 seconds just to load up a page. I guess thats not a big gap to most people, but to me its bothersome. Is it Safari thats being slow? Or is it just me being impatient...

Running Tiger (Safari 2.0) and specs are in my sig. Thanks.

Empty your cache, clear your rss feeds and if you have AutoFill Others on, edit the list down to 10 or so. Quit Safari, reopen and see if that helps.

The other thing to ask if you have any third-party plug-ins such as SpeedDownload? If so, disable.

Try another browser, perhaps? Camino nightly builds are often quite nice.

Are you saying it's slower than Safari 1.x.x or just slow compared to your PC? It's well-known that browsing on the Mac is slow in comparison with browsing on a PC, and that appears to be true even with Tiger.

Really? It's generally accepted that's still the case? I've got basically the same model of PowerBook, and it doesn't really feel slower than either IE or Firefox on any of the PCs I use.

I moved over to Firefox since Safari no longer works with my online banking after 10.4 install. Though I never gave much thought to those that said Firefox was faster I have to now admit they're right. At least on my system Firefox is A LOT faster than Safari.

Can't hurt to try it out Asodamiac.

it does have a ram issue.. I managed over 22 days uptime on tiger until a couple of days ago. Safari had been running non stop most of that time also, and I found it was getting slow. Turns out it was taking up around 1 gig of ram in total. Tried to restart safari, and it quit, and also lost all my prefs into the bargain..
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Just thought I'd say that I was experiencing the exact same problems described in the original post on my Pismo approximately 2 weeks after a wipe-and-install Tiger install. I rebooted the machine numerous times, trashed preferences, even trashed the entire ~/library/safari folder, but nothing worked.

Although I’d never previously resorted to it as a means to correct browser problems, a hard reset of my cable modem and wireless hub (suggested in a previous post) did fix the problem. Now, I never had to do this with Panther, but that could be coincidence.

Anyway, to those suggesting people switch browsers, I would add that I was seeing extremely slow page load times regardless of what browser I was using (even Mail retrieved mail slowly). I was also noticing slow page loads on sites that, while their pages used multiple images, didn't “outsource” the hosting of said images. Finally, I should point out that whatever was going on it didn't affect an iMac connected to the same hub (though not wirelessly) and didn’t affect the household PC (locked in a dark wired closet but nevertheless connected to the same hub).

Suffice to say, I'm glad the problem is fixed. Hopefully someone else will find this helpful.

While I've found that Safari 2.0 is faster than the old version, it does have a habit of producing spinning wheels and quitting after a while, especially with multiple tabs open.
If I had a signature, it would look something like this

Safari likes to load almost the entire page before actually displaying it. You can stop it from doing this with TinkerTool. There is an option in TinkerTool to make Safari start displaying the page while it's loading. I think this is how Internet Explorer works as well. I turned this option on and I no longer have to wait for my pages to show up.

Let us know if this helps.

That should only make a difference if you're on dialup, and slow dialup at that. With Safari 1.3/2.0, Safari will render as soon as it can while avoiding an unstyled content flash. Of course, this isn't always perfect and can make some sites a bit slower, depending on how their code is laid out. But on a broadband connection to a well designed and well served site, Safari 2.0 is damn fast. We just got some new dual 2.3s where I work and Safari is really damn fast on them.

I find 2.0 a lot more beachbally - especially when loading more than one tab at a time. I find Google advertising can slow a site right down.

Alas, this effectively removes the 'cancel page-load' option.
