Spotlight works great but I shouldn´t have to run a Terminal command to get it to index new files...

It´s not like I haven´t waited for Spotlight to index new files... but it shouldn´t take 2 days for Spotlight to index it...

What can I do so Spotlight starts indexing new or changed files?

Spotlight is supposed to index any new files, or any files you edit.

you should not have to do anything (in theory)

works for me - i.e. if i add text to a file, i can then search for it straight away
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

the underpinnings of spotlight mean that it doesn't need to index new files, any write to the disk, be it a new file or a modification of an existing one, is automatically added to the spotlight index, thats the beauty of it, index once, never need to think about it again.

This was the flaw with sherlock's find by content, it searched all well and good but you had to continually update the index.

In my case, I moved my iphoto library from an external to my internal. It had already been indexed, however, in the old location. This morning, I renamed some photos that had been added to the library Monday morning, just for a test. Spotlight cannot find any of the photos by their "digital photo number" nor is it finding the new ones by name. Do I have to somehow force spotlight to reindex the library? Somehow, I'm thinking it should be easier than this.

On the other hand, earlier this week it did a great job finding something for me. but that was words in a document.

Well thanks for the answers... but I will just have to wait for 10.4.1 to see if it fixes my problem... because no new or edited files show up in Spotlight results...

I'm having the same problem with Spotlight not updating files, at least not immediately. It's been a day and I'm still waiting for a pdf I downloaded to be updated by Spotlight.

edit: something I noticed… when I moved the downloaded file off the desktop to another folder then Spotlight indexed it. Anybody else notice files on the desktop not being indexed?
