Try booing the hardware test CD/DVD that came with your iMac. If that still doesn't work, remove 3rd party ram if any. If that still doesn't work call Apple.

Sounds like there's something wrong with your hard drive. You should take it in to an Apple store and get them to replace the drive for you if the computer's still under warantee. Otherwise you might want to do it yourself or find a friend who can.

Hope you backed your stuff up.

Hard drives can blow up. It's rare (and more rare on Macs than other machines, typically, due to the extra testing that Apple does), but it does happen. Unluck of the draw. It's still under warranty; get it replaced.

My very first G3 iMac ate its hard drive after only 2 months. Got it replaced for free, but they couldn't rescue any of the data on it.
As for backups, SuperDrive + DVD = Easy
Or if you don't have a SuperDrive, think about getting a Firewire hard drive to back up to.
(I do both - I learned my lesson.)

UPDATE::

I just got home from the mac store, turns out, my LOGIC BOARD is completely fried, and the think it was giving the hd error because of the logic board not knowing whats goin on.. the logic board is 750 bucks to replace, 150 for labor, and they are gonna check my hard drive, my total came to 1150.00 dollars, but best part is. ITS ALL COVERED FOR FREE! the only think ill have to pay for, is if my hard drive is done, they will try to restore some of my stuff , and if the back up works ,they charge me 50 bucks for that. So , im glad my hard drive most likely isnt fried, and im gonna start doing regular backups from here on out!

It always takes something like this to get people to backup their data, unfortunately. Hope it all works out!

Yep, it's hard to overemphasize the usefulness of an external firewire drive (preferrably LaCie) for backups. But do turn off Spotlight for the backup directory, or else you'll get doubles of everything!

yeah but if you turn off or disconnect the external Spotlight is smart enough not to list double info!
