I have just purchased 10.4 to run on my G5 1.8 3g ram. It seems there has been a slowdown in some applications. Such as I will click a box in lets say GoLive and it takes a second or two to react. It was immediate before. I have repaired permissions and tryed booting in safe mode, but the problem is still there. Also with other programs such as Photoshop it takes a few seconds to access the save as, or other menu options. I get the spinning ball.
Thanks for any help

Lots of other threads on this. Did you do a clean install or an archive?

Things should be faster not slower. Do a search, or browse back a few pages for answers, usual stuff applies - repair permissions/type of instal... etc

I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Sounds like Spotlight could be indexing...

I have found that there is some kind of bug in the text rendering engine in Tiger - it seems that after a certain period of hours , and perhaps after the screensaver has been activated, or overnight - I'm not entirely sure what the trigger is - apps will suddenly become extremely slow at rendering text. Eg. the Terminal (which is actually blindingly fast now, before this bug kicks in), and BBEdit. Quitting the app and opening it again cures the problem - until it happens again the next day.
Not sure if this is what you are seeing, but it's bugging the heck out of me !

(snip)
Happens to BBedit once in a while here... no idea what could cause it.

How much of an advantage does a clean install give you ?

When we upgrade our server to the latest version, Apple themselves recommend format/install over archive/install. Preferences that may be fine in Panther may act like they're corrupted in a different version of OS X, among other reasons.
It's just a lot safer (from the OS standpoint) to do a format/install, and that's straight from Apple.
The slow down, as someone suggested, could just be Spotlight indexing.
