I will be getting a powerbook soon, but have no experience with Mac OS. From what I've read it looks like the default installation uses one partition and I would like to split the disk into several partitions (for easier backup, reinstall if necessary etc).

1) What are the default paths, e.g. for applications, user home directories etc.?
2) Is it possible to use separate partition for the user home directories (and if so, how)?

Any help or links will be appreciated

There are lots of threads about partitioning. The most recent thread I've been involved in is here. For the reasons you mentioned, partitioning adds little to no benefits.

To answer your question
1) HD/Applications
HD/Users
HD/Users/*your home folder*
2) You can using NetInfo Manager to point these folders to any partitions you make.
