I've got a Cube 450 MHz with 256 MB ram and I am not sure whether or not to stay with Panther or upgrade to Tiger. I am not interested in putting any additional ram in it, so given its current configuration, which would be the better choice? Tiger's ram requirements are obviously higher than Panther's, but would the upgrade to Tiger bring an "overall" improvement on the Cube?

Add more RAM and you'll be fine. But it won't magically double the speed, although it will be faster than Panther.
Even since 10.1, the RAM requirement should have been 512 MB.

hmm tough question. i have a 450 mhz sawtooth with 640 mb of ram and it runs better than 9.2 did honestly. but i think it primarily because of the ram

I appreciate the responses. I guess my specific question would be, which OS (Panther or Tiger) would run the best with ONLY my current amount of RAM (256MB)? Or would it be so close that it would be a toss up?

I'm not sure the RAM requirements for Tiger are much greater than Panther. I think they just finally admitted it.
That said, I haven't seen Tiger on such a machine, so I can't say from experience. I do know it provided a very nice boost in many areas for my PowerBook. I doubt it would actually hurt your speed.

No, I think the RAM requirements are about the same. Which means: I would recommend 512+ MB for either Panter or Tiger.

Your best choice is to get a 512 memory upgrade for $90 and forget about Tiger. Your memory is the limiting factor of your system, not the OS.

So from your experience, Tiger does require more memory than Panther?

No, Tiger does not, but, if you want to speed up your system and make everything work smoother, Panther with 768 ram will be faster than Tiger with 256ram

It runs fine on a system with 512 MB. Ditto for Panther, so no. But from experience I can tell you, 256 MB are not enough. I'd rather keep Panther and upgrade the RAM than the other way around. Ideally, you'd upgrade both
