Finder Status Bar to Display Selected Item(s) Size?

Is there a way to get Finder's status bar to show the current size of select items rather than the remaining space free on the hard disk? That seems to be the most backwards thing to display. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would be nice if it had both. Apple should add it. I'd also like to know the total size of things in the Trash, too. Like in OS 9, when you went to delete everything from the Trash, it told you how much space all of the files you were deleting took up.
