Check this out: after weeks of uptime, i tried to send a
mail from Mac Mail (the program that comes with OS X) it
wouldn't go. Strange. So i force quit Mail and rebooted.
When the system came up, the user account had totally
reset itself to the default installation settings. All of my
Safari bookmarks, mail prefs, everything had vanished.
The desktop changed back to the default. The Dock
showed only the default applications. When i checked my
third party apps like Palm Desktop and such they were
untouched. Likewise, my "Admin" account was not
bothered. Only my normal user account (to which i have
no administrative priveledges assigned) was affected. I
looked in the trash and couldn't find any signs of a "prefs"
file that might have ended up there. Additionally, after
rebooting i noticed that my (dynamically allocated) ip
address has changed.
What has happened here?

Thanks,

JPW

More info. Panther or Tiger. If Tiger. what type of install. Your Mac? Any extra user profiles. Why did you reboot after force quitting? Do any steps in between?

Cool. Well, Panther on a Pismo. Extra user profiles? Do you mean do i have any other user accounts on this machine? If so, i only have one other account that i use as an "admin" account with unlimited privledges. I should have said that i "attempted" to force quit mail. It never quit and that's why i rebooted.

That's it. Verdict?
