(I thought I posted this a couple of weeks ago, but I guess I didn’t.)
My wife’s laptop is running Tiger. She bought the PB before we were married last year and consequently has her maiden name. She’s been asking for me to change it, which I’ve tried but screwed up.
I can’t say exactly all that I did, because I got in over my head. I ended up creating another account which didn’t have any of her settings, documents, emails, etc. I went into NetInfo Manager and somehow changed most of incidences of her maiden name with her new name. Success? Not completely.
When she has new software to download, it asks for an Administrator name. Usually this field is already populated with a user name, but hers isn’t. I’ve tried using her original user name and new user name (both long and short versions). The only name that works is “root,” which obviously isn’t good.
Is there a way to fix this? When I go into System Preferences and Accounts, her new name is listed there as an Administrator account. This doesn’t make sense.

In NetInfo, is your wife's account listed along with root and the other admin accounts in groups/admin?

I'll check. If it is, how do I change/separate it?

you didnt need to use net info
all you had to do was create another admin account. Copy everything inside the old user folder to the new user folder and it would of copied everything and made it just like it was before except login name and password
but since you did it that way your kinda in trouble.
check to make sure in the groups that the new and old user are still in the admin group like he said above.
if not put them in there and then try to install new software.

Well, the whole problem was staring me in the face. For whatever reason, my wife's account was a "Standard" account and the "Allow user to administer this computer" wasn't checked. All is well now. Thanks.

Doing that manually in the Finder would totally screw up permissions. I think the NetInfo route was likely the best course of action to take. Glad you solved the issue, p1969.

Here's where I go and make myself look stupid, but couldn't you have just changed the name in the accounts preferences panel??? It makes sense to me.

Part of it you can change, but doesn't change everything. I just hope I don't need to change her name again.
