First of all, I'd like to say hello to everyone! (I'm new to this forum)

Anyway, I was organizing my files and putting some of them into the movies folder earlier today. Accidentally, I dragged the "movies" shortcut out of the box- and it just went "poof". I have no idea how I can get it back. Can anyone help me out?

Here's a screenshot. (Taken with FreeSnap)

Just drag it back in from your home folder.

This is why I think you should have to Command-drag to remove things from the Dock and the sidebar like you have to with menu items.

one more thing. you don't need freesnap to take a screenshot.

apple + shift + 3 = fullscreen
apple + shift + 4 = click and drag a selection
apple + shift + 4 then spacebar = click on a window

built into mac os x

i'm aware of those... but those save as .pdf's, and it's much easier to just use freesnap, which can save the shot as a .jpg.

btw, i actually figured it out before coming back to this thread.. i posted almost instantly after having the problem, out of panic... i thought it would've been something much more complicated.

Not if you're using Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or better. Then, the screenshots are saved as PNGs.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

However, the built-in key combinations can do more than just PDF (PNG for Tiger)...

Add "CTRL" key to the combination to copy the screenshot to the clipboard instead of saving as a file. You can then paste it anywhere into whatever file format you like.

Very flexible.

As someone else said, if you add the CTRL key to those combos, you send the screenshot to the clipboard. If you open Preview and type apple + N, you automatically get the screenshot in a new window. Type apple + shift + E and you can save it to any format that Preview supports, such as Jpeg, Tiff etc.

You could also fire up Grab which exports in tiff by default.

Great tip! I think you need to type Apple-Shift-S, though, it bring up Preview's Save As dialog box. The Apple-Shift-E doesn't get you anywhere.

I think it's still apple-shift-E in 10.3 — for Export. It looks like that's been rolled into Save As now.
