So I tried to start playing Maelstrom, and it crashed out on me. I forced quit, but the black arrow is still below the dock icon. I checked in activity monitor and top, and the process is no longer listed, so I don't know the PID. I'm sure it would go away if I rebooted, but I figure there must be someway to kill the process.

If I try to force quit now, it doesn't go anywhere. From the force quit menu, I choose it, pick force quit, confirm the choice, and it disappears from the Force Quit Window, but is still in the dock. If I close and reopen the Force Quit window, it reappears in there again.

Any advice?

Yeah this happens to me as well sometimes, just kill the Finder and dock as well. That fixes it most of the time.

Although I have never experienced this exact situation, I agree with Goldfinger's assessment. If the process is not shown in Activity Monitor, it's dead; the Dock probably just missed the notification.

Admittedly I am still using 10.3.9, but I have had a similar problem since the days of 10.0.

An application stops responding, go to the Force Quit dialog and select Force Quit. Application disappears from this list, but is still in the dock and the application window is still open.

Close Force Quit and reopen. Select Force Quit again. This time the application does disappear and the dock is updated.

Same problem since 10.0. Have always performed installs after wiping the hard disk. Very odd.

Hmm, I force quit the dock and relaunched the finder, but no dice, Maelstrom won't die!
