I have 10.4 and I would like to uninstall Classic since I haven't lunched it in 2 years.
Do you just trash the OS 9 system folder or is there more to it?

Thanks

You should be able to just move it to the trash.

I had been wondering the same thing...

so does that mean when you drag it into the trash, that the system preferences classic box also dissapears?

No. The system pref stays there even if you remove Classic. You can have it disappear if you use a program called diablotin.

I suspect Classic system pref will disappear under 10.4 if you don't have a valid classic system on the disk. (This is the case for me after a clean install, and I don't have classic in system prefs). You can notice that the classic icon in the prefs actually appears after you open system preference on 10.4. I suspect this is because it actually checks wether there is a valid OS 9 install on the disk.

mmm, its still there for me (after a fresh Tiger install) and I haven't had a classic folder for years.

How can I get rid of it? Should I get rid of it?

When installing Tiger, did you toggle off the option for Classic?

I didn't see it - thats what happens I suppose when you just keep hitting 'next' - but there is definitly no OS9 system folder there, just a classic pref pane.

Haven't tried it in Tiger but have you tried dragging the pref pane off and out?

I confirm that I do have the classic pref pane installed, but it doesn't show up in System Preferences. Maybe you still have the .plist file storing the prefs? did you do Erase&Install or Archive&Install?

Interesting! Have you any idea what .plist and where please, perhaps all I need to do is edit it? I did an Archive&Install.

On my machine, there's a brief pause before Classic shows up in the System Preferences. Apparently, it first opens without Classic, then checks my disks, and adds Classic once it finds my OS 9 System Folder.

Based on this, my guess would be that it would not show up at all if an OS 9 System Folder was not present.

Really, though, is there some important reason that you need to get rid of that pref pane?

I recently got the Classic icon appearing in System Prefs, I did a clean install of Tiger when I first got it on April 29th but this past week, it has appeared.
How do I get rid of it?

It's stored in /System/Library/PreferencePanes. You might have to enter a password to delete it from there. If you're really intent on removing all traces of classic, don't forget the Classic Startup application, which is stored in /System/Library/CoreServices

I've just discovered how to stop System Prefs loading the classic icon, go to your home folder and then Library, then delete the empty unused Classic folder, bingo, its gone.
Seems to be a bug that some apps install a Classic folder in your Library folder thus making System Prefs show the Classic icon

OK, but the folder is recreated when I open System Prefs, and the Classic system pref is still there.

Look up 2 posts from yours. Go to where it's stored, and trash it, if you really don't want it.

I'm about to receive my 12" iBook 1.33GHz and I was wondering if the steps described above will remove all traces of Classic?

yes, removing the System Folder (Not the folder System with the X on it) and the Applications (OS9) folder will remove classic from your laptop. Also trash the classic system pane If you are lookin gto save space, download an application like Delocalizer, which will remove all language files excprt for your default language. This should save a LOT of space. Hope you enjoy your new laptop
