Just reading that in you go on desktop and open up new finder window, what you set will apply to all others. Not working for me. Is that true? (I set new finder window to column view -- does not stick to anything else)

To change all windows to column view:

After clicking on the desktop, go to the Menu bar and choose "Finder" --> "Preferences". Make sure to click the General Button and then put a checkmark next to "Open new windows in column view."
