Is 10.4 working ok on your system? If so, how much free disk space do you have? It could be you don't have enough free space left to update to 10.4.1...

Other than that I really don't know what it might be...
PowerMac G5 - 2.0 4 1/2 Gig Ram - Tiger 10.4.2
30" Apple Monitor - LaCie d2 Tripple 320 Gig
iMac G5 1.8 1 1/2 Gig Ram 20" - Tiger 10.4.2
Amd64 - Gamer - Water cooled

You're in Chile. Where did you download the update from? Was your version of Tiger purchased in Chile? I think I remember with OS 9 etc that you could only apply an update that was from the same country as the installation. E.g a British install has to have British updates.
I'm not sure whether this is still true for OS X but it could well be your problem.
Go into NetInfo Manager and enable the root user or superuser from the security menu. You will have to authenticate from that menu first.
Logout and click the other button, log in as root and the password should be blank, I think.
If you can't login, log back in as your user and go back to Netinfo Manager.
Authenticate again, then go to users > root in the lists. Double click on the password value box, erase what is contained in it and type your password. When you have finished try logging in as root again, then go to software update when you have. It should now work and you should be able to get updates.

Huh?

There is no reason to enable root.

If he's having problems with software update, he needs to work with Apple on troubleshooting the problem, not blindly start installing updates as root.

No no no no no. OS X does not vary by region at all, and he should not be enabling root user for something like this.

My reason behind doing this, is that my software update didn't work in my normal account (which is admin). I logged into root earlier today to delete something and bam there was software update telling me to download an update to dvd player. I'd heard that the dvd player update had been released a coupe of weeks ago, and couldn't figure out why software update wasn't showing it (along with the 10.4.1 update which I downloaded manually). I guess for some reason it's not working with my account.
Does it really do any harm to enable root? As long as you understand that it has full access to the system and not to go deleting strange files, you should be fine.
Yes apple need to fix software update, but it's a small-ish work around for now, and he'll only be spending about 5 minutes in it about every 2 months.
If i'm wrong - sorry. I was only trying to help.

Can you post a screenshot of the serial number of our OS? It's under the Apple menu, choose About this Mac and click two times on the version number of the OS. That should help us to work things out.
iMac G5 2.0 Ghz 20", 2 GB RAM, 400 GB, OS X 10.4.5, iPod with color screen 60 GB

You should definitely contact Apple and let them know that your retail copy of 8B425 isn't working correctly. I'm sure they'll get right on getting you a replacement.

8A425 was a pre-release developer build.

There is NO WAY you can have legally bought that at a store in Miami, because it was never sold.

Congratulations.

Except that he didn't give his entire serial number. He X'ed out the last few digits. So what was your point?

Nice job on the quotes there. Look, Zorrito asked about what 8B15 was. 8B15 is NOT the retail build, it's 10.4.1. 8A428 was the retail build. Nobody here mentioned 8B15 until Zorrito did. So how did he get the new build information? I think he's in on more than you picked up on. Though I'm not exactly sure what he's getting at.
