I just installed Tiger onto my powerMac the other day and its been wonderful. Well everything except Expose`. When i switched to Tiger (from 10.3, I did a complete wipe of the drive and fresh install, no upgrading or archieving) I noticed Expose` performance became horrible in comparison. Its just not fluid anymore with even the smallest amount of windows open. I tested it with three normal Finder windows open and it felt like I had 20 open, it seemed to be dropping frames like crazy during the animation. On Panther I could have had easily 10-15 windows open before I would see any lose in performance. Mean while other things like Dashboard and window minimizing all perform beautifully (in the case of window minimizing and resizing etc, its noticably better than it was under Panther).

So Im alittle lost on what has caused this, beyond the OS switch, everything is exaclty the same, all the way down to programs installed.

Any help would be great

Some quick specs in realtion to Expose:
128mb Geforce 5200 Ultra
PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 867mhz (with 2mb L3)
896mb RAM
21in Studio Display @ 1344x1008

Try restarting the dock to see if that improves things. Tools such as Tinkertool can be used to restart the dock (download).

I have the same problem, and updating to 10.4.1 didn't bring the performance back to its previous level. I have a TiBook 800.
Apparently it's a known issue (not on recent machines though) as I saw it discussed on the apple support boards and other sites.

Not sure if this applies to Expose, but I was having dismal performance on my dual G5 with 1.5GB of ram. This was a clean install on a brand new drive. Applications seemed to launch fine and working within apps was fast but it seemed like GUI performance was slow - especially minimize and maximize windows. I tried rebooting, no better, repaired permissions, no better, so I read across a thread on the Apple forums and someone had mentioned about spotlight indexing. Well, my spotlight was not indexing at the time I had this bad performance, but for the heck of it, I forced spotlight to reindex my system, since I've done that, my GUI performance has improved to that of Panther and maybe faster - you may want to try this if you have sluggish performance

To force spotlight to reindex:
1) Go to System Preferences > Spotlight
2) Select the Privacy tab
3) Click the add button to add your drive to the list (if you have more than one drive - add it as well)
4) Now click the remove button to remove the drive(s) you just added
5) You should now see spotlight reindexing - look for the dot in the middle of the magnifying glass

Wait for the indexing process to complete - may take a while if you have a ton of data. Now try expose to see if it's any better.

Good Luck

thanks for the tip passmaster !
Unfortunately that didn't work out for me, Expose's performance is still very sluggish compared to what it was in Panther. Hopefully this will be fixed in future upgrades
