My fiancee own 700 mhz emac.

She was unplugging the emac to move it to another room and it hasn't been powered on for about 10 hours until finally she turned it on, the Safari bookmarks disappeared, Stickies notes disappeared back to orginial, desktop returned back to her previous wallpaper.

Also when she clicked on iChat 2.1 the window appeared as new login user. She was puzzled, why did all her safari bookmarks, Stickies disappeared?!

Help to recover these back?

Was the machine properly shut down?

The other thing is, did she rename her home directory? That would reset everything to a default set of prefs upon re-login.

Is the startup disk almost full? If so, that could be the problem.

in side the main harddrives is a folder called Users in the Users folder is a folder with your shortname on it. if she changed that and not her short name it wouldnt of found it and just reset everything back to default.

if the mac wasnt properly shut down this could cause you to lose memory and more important in this case your settings.

i would also give a look at the user libraray (/Users/~/Library/) and check all the permissions (+I [EYE!]) and give them a look to make sure the user has read and wright permissions, group has Read and right and others is No Access.

one finally thing is to go to User library again and in there is a Safari Folder. open it up and take out the bookmarks and put on desktop. Then i would go to safari and import bookmarks (i know this from debug menu but theres one other place i forgot) and get your bookmarks back

stickies i do not know were they are stored.

the background is stored in your User library Preferences folder under com.apple.desktop.plist
make sure this isnt read only also

huh? SHe have 40 GB and she only used 8 Gb.. so she have about 29.58 GB available in her HD.

If this isnt what you're talking about, please correct me. Thanks.

Yep. That was what I was talking about but she's got plenty of room left so rule that out.

- She didn't change a short name of hers
- She "shut down" her emac in proper way by Apple Menu>Shut down
- It all looked good in read/right permissions.
- I couldn't import the Safari bookmark as you described above.
