Just wondering whether the 'Spotlight Comments' in the Tiger Get Info window are any any different at all in structure or functionality as compared to Panther or previous Mac OS versions. Also, where exactly in a file is this comment data stored? Is it some HFS fork/stream? Can Panther read Tiger comments, and vs. versa? For that matter, how if at all have comments changed since System 6 days?

The Spotlight comment is stored in a hidden .DS_Store file in the same folder as the file. It doesn't look like they're different from Panther.

In classic Mac OS the comments were stored in the Desktop Database.

are you sure this is correct?
i just created a test empty folder with a single file in it, to which i added some comments (using Panther at the moment). In the terminal (ls -la and pico) I wasn't able to locate any .DS_Store file containing the comment string i entered.

Yes, I'm sure this is correct. I tried it before posting. Adding a Spotlight comment creates a .DS_Store file that contains the comment and deleting the .DS_Store file removes the comment again (after restarting the Finder, it seems to cache the info).

I'm sure it was the same in Panther.

As for the history of comments: I don't believe the the functionality was changed at all from System 6 through OS 9. However, OS 9 comments are incompatible with comments from any version of OS X, which doesn't use the Desktop Database. It simply won't see them.
