First of all, you don't need Classic to open a PDF. The default application should be set to Preview, but if it got set to a Classic app somehow, you can fix this just by clicking on any PDF file, choosing Get Info from the File menu, selecting Preview from the "Open With" pop-up menu, and clicking the "Change All" button.

Secondly, you can delete Classic just by deleting the folder named "System Folder" at the root of your disc. Note: this is not the "System" folder, which is OS X and which you'd better not delete or you'll not be able to boot anymore! The folder is called "System Folder" and may have a folder icon with a "9" on it.

However, you don't really need to delete Classic to solve your problem. All you need is to change the default setting for PDF files. You can also set a setting in the Classic preference pane to warn you before starting classic. Or, you could just move the System Folder inside a folder that your girlfriend has read access to and you don't. Anyway, there are plenty of ways to solve the problem so that you and your girlfriend can both be happy.

Describe why you can not change the default PDF application and why you can't delete the OS 9 System Folder. What happens when you attempt either?

Click on a PDF file and select Get Info from the File menu. Click the disclosure triangle next to Open With and change Acrobat 4 to Preview. After doing this, click the Change All button.

flammiac: Could you describe what happens after you have changed the file's 'Open with' app to Preview? Click Change All, close the info window.

Open the Get Info window again straight away. Is it still set to Preview?
If it is still set to preview, double-click the file, does it open in Preview or Acrobat 4?

Are you getting a popup that says *why* you can't change the pdf's default Open With app? How about one when you try to delete classic?

Just guessing, but it sounds like you're either trying to do these things from Classic or at least while Classic is running. Methinks we need more info to be helpful.
