Since upgrading to Tiger, all my applications say .app on the end. Is this a feature or a bug? I preferred the old way with just the application name.

It's by design.
You can turn off extensions in the Advanced Finder preferences.

I thought that was just for documents. I guess now with trojan horses posing as documents, they needed to add .app to everything to limit the confusion?

Applications always had a .app extension; it was just never shown. I don't know the reasoning, but "Always show extensions" in Tiger now also shows the .app extension.
Trojans usually pose as applications.

Try:
1. Click on the word "Finder" on the menubar
2. click on "Preferences"
3. click on "Advanced" and uncheck "Show all file extensions"
4. You should be good to go from here

trojans are generally posing as mp3s, documents, or something that's usually harmless.

Actually, applications never displayed the .app extension on my system before 10.4.0.
When I upgraded to Tiger, they suddenly did.
This has been fixed in 10.4.1.
I have had the "Show all suffixes" checkbox off all the time.

I wouldn't call this a fix, to be honest. It's important that executable code be clearly marked as such. There's a lot of malware on Windows that depends on the 'hide extensions' functionality to work properly. This is not to say that I agree with the concept of filename extensions -they're a bad hack that has no place in a modern GUI- but if they must be done, they should at least be done properly, and that means always showing them.
