I think that I have the 100% CPU problem that Norton Antivirus 9 & Virex w/ Tiger have.

I'm not sure, but I think that Virex might have been autoinstalled when I purchase my PB w/ .mac.

I'd like to go through and manually remove both programs (or at least verify that neither is installed anymore).

Anyone have any pointers on where to look? The Symantec site doesn't describe how to manually remove Norton Antivirus----that I have been able to locate.

Thanks,
Curtis

Virex should have a README detailing where the components were installed in /Applications/Virex 7.x.

You can either do a spotlight search for anything called Virex, or you could do this:

Delete:

/usr/local/vscanx
/Applications/Virex 7.x
/Library/Frameworks/MacScanner.framework
Your Virex prefs in ~/Library/Preferences

Virex installs much more than just in the /Applications/Virex folder. It does come with an uninstall script in the disk image. Run this script to uninstall it.

Thanks guys. I did all that. Virex and Norton appear to uninstall smoothly with their automated uninstalls.

However, I am still unable to get rid of the CPU-hogging process 'update' which is launched by 'launchd'. A couple of other folks on this forum said it might be related to Norton or Virex.

So my next question is, how do I hunt down this nasty process and figure out who or what installed it? It essentially takes any spare CPU % and gobbles it up. :-(

Thanks,
Curtis

It seems update is not related to Norton or Virex, but a system process. I takes 0% CPU for me.

man update:

The update command helps protect the integrity of disk volumes by flush-
ing volatile cached filesystem data to disk at thirty second intervals.
Update uses the sync(2) function call to do the task. The normal_inter-
val and save_energy_interval can be used to set the sync(2) interval in
seconds of the normal case and the case where the computer is trying to
save energy.

Update is commonly invoked at startup time by rc(8) when the system goes
multi-user.

I understand. However, could you venture a guess as to why, even after letting the computer sit for an hour, the CPU utilization doesn't go down?
