I would like to install Tiger on my B&W, the only problem is I don't have a DVD drive on that machine. I have a DVD on my iBook and was wondering if it's possible to install by booting the iBook in firewire target mode.
The other option is setting up a netboot of Tiger. I don't have 10.4 server so I'd have to do a hack together version. I found this: http://www.geeklan.co.uk/?p=26 and was wondering if anyone had any better advise. The netbooting seems like a weekend task. I am looking for the easiest and simplest solution short of buying an Apple DVD drive on ebay. Thanks.

You don't need to get an overpriced Apple DVD drive. Just get an Apple-supported DVD burner such as a Pioneer DVR-A09/109 or earlier for under $100. (In fact, just for installation, it probably doesn't even matter that it be Apple-supported.)

I would say don't ever install an OS onto a disk mounted in Target Disk mode, since the OS installer will install the appropriate software for the currently running system, and not for the actualy CPU that the disk is for. Some say this will work fine, but I don't think I'd want to risk it.
The best way to install Tiger sans DVD drive is to copy the entire install DVD to a Firewire disk (iPods work great), and boot and install from that.

The OS X installer is a universal installer. It does not install a subset of files particular to any given machine.

Well, let's say you have a DVD drive in one machine and not another- you don't get DVD Player unless you have a DVD drive. And while I don't know for certain that any important system-level software is selectively installed, it very well could be at some point.
I realize that for the most part you are 100% correct, but I think it's a bad habit to get in. If doing this works, though, who cares- do what's easiest.

Does the B&W support booting from a Firewire drive? How do I go about that, I have an iPod which I could use. Can I install if I copy the install DVD to a hard drive that resides inside the machine? For example I have two hard drives, one with 10.2 and one with the install image of Tiger. Select my boot drive as the install image drive and reboot. Thanks.

The other way round will work.
Boot the B&W into Target Disk Mode (it does support TDM, doesn't it? Not 100% sure here.) and hook it up to the iBook. Then install Tiger from the iBook.

I have installed LG combo drive in BW, you can find one probably for 30-40 bucks. Works great and boots from CD.

The B&W can neither boot from FireWire, nor go into Target Disk Mode. (Note that those features always go together — no Mac model supports just one or the other. All or none.)

After reading this thread: http://www.applefritter.com/node/7631 here is my plan.
Install 8gig HD in the B&W. Open up filesharing on the B&W (running 10.2) and copy the whole DVD to the 8gig drive. Change my boot settings on the B&W and boot from the HD that contains the DVD image and install.
Does this sound like a workable plan?
