I see it too, but i haven't noticed any ill effects from it. If it bothers you so much, just quit the process from the Activity Monitor and launch it again (it's in /System/Library/Frameworks/InstantMessage.framework - just double click iChatAgent.app)

Yeah, I see that process in my Activity Monitor after quitting iChat too. Don't know what it is all about. Does not seem to affect my iChatting or anything else.

It shows as "not responding" because it's not responding to Activity Monitor, for some reason. That doesn't mean it's not working fine, though, because it is. If it weren't, you wouldn't be chatting.

If there's a bug, it's that iChatAgent doesn't flip some bits that let AM know it's "alive."

I am getting the same thing, no ill effect except I notice that
I hear the hard drive chunking away. It would seem to
be a problem if the performance of the machine is
being effected by the disc activity.

I've got the same problem but notice that when the iChat.app isn't open I don't get notifications when a user comes online/goes offline etc. So iChatAgent hanging is causing problems and isn't something to ignore as the Apple TIL suggests. Very aggravating.

Saw the answer to this somewhere, something like the difference between the refresh rate of your status between the AIM and ichat interfaces, hence ichat thinks something is wrong but there isn't I am sure someone else can explain this better doesn't matter nothing negative happens not seen a machine where this doesn't happen.

This is normal and isn't cause for concern.

See this KB article for more info.

Hope this helps....

Should it also remain open and Not Responding after closing iChat, with the menubar status disabled?

Did you try putting it on TOP of the tiger bug?

The problem is that it does cause problems. You wont get notifications of users going online/offline (when the iChat app isn't open).

Only issue I have with iChat is that sometimes when moving files from Mac to Mac here at the house the file swapping will just stop. Sometimes if I restart the process it'll work in the next couple tries. Pretty much have moved to AIM because of it. Yes I know there are other options to send files here at home.
