I plan on doing a clean install (an erase & install to be exact). I've read somewhere that after erase & install with Tiger, we can't install classic via our restore cds anymore. Is that true? I've got OSX 10.2 restore discs if that helps. I need classic to reinstall Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and the Sims and I also read here at MacNN's Games foruem that Jedi Academy disc 2 needs classic to complete installation.

As an alternate, I was going to erase & install with Panther, then install classic and then archive and install with Tiger.

Anyone with tips or suggestions on what I should do?

you can use Terminal to extract the OS 9 support files from the system restore CD.

1.open Terminal application

2.type "cd /Volumes/name_of_the_CD/.images"
(need to add \ if there is a space in the directory name.
eg. for me, I have to type "cd /Volumes/PowerMac\ Software/.." instead of "cd/Volumes/PowerMac Software/..")

3. type "cp OS9General.dmg ~/desktop/" to copy the file to your desktop.

4. open the .dmg file and copy system folder to your desired location.

That's it. The classic support should be back.

Thanks dli537 for your instructions for classic support!
I'm going to do the erase and install for Tiger and add classic support sometime in early to mid June once I have taken care of my exams.

You're a lifesaver! I was going to reinstall Panther and then add classic, with an archive and install of Tiger as a final step. Thanks to you, you've just saved me the unnecessary trouble!

You've just made my summer! I hope you have a nice summer yourself!

You can also just find a valid System Folder and copy it over.

They should all have the same version of OS 9.

Let me clarify about the Software Restore CDs, they're excluding the Jaguar 10.2 OSX Install CDs.
They're titled:" PowerMac G4 Software Restore CD 1 of 4", "PowerMac G4 Software Restore CD 2 of 4", "PowerMac G4 Software Restore CD 3 of 4" and "PowerMac G4 Software Restore CD 4 of 4."

So are you saying that they all have classic on it and I could use any of the 4 CDs?

By the way, thanks for replying to my post, Dli537! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Classic should be on one of the restore CDs, but I can't tell you which one since I don't have a G4 any more (sold it; my current G5 came with a DVD instead). You should still be able to look for it disk by disk. Just type "cd /Volumes/name_of_the_CD/" and then type "sudo ls" to see the contents of the CD. If Apple did not change the structure of the restore disks, you should see a .image folder and the classic files should be inside. Just tell me what you see on the restore CDs so I can help you further.

If you have a CD-R Drive, you can just backup the System folder and/or Application(Mac OS 9) folder currently in your hard drive to a CD-R disk. Erase and install Tiger. Then, copy the folders back and you'll re-gain classic support.

I haven't gotten to the point of reinstalling yet but I'm going to in a week or two after finals.

You said that we could copy the OS9 classic folder and Apps to a cd-r and burn it and then copy it back to the HD after the Tiger reinstallation (erase & install) and I'll think I'll try that instead since that is much easier.

If I need further help I'll post back.

Thanks again for your help dli537!

UPDATE: I just copied my OS9 System folder and Apps to cd and burnt it to a cd from finder. I'll keep anyone who is interested posted on my classic installation after my Tiger Erase & Install. It'll be about a week or two. I think once I've recopied the OS9 system folder too my new tiger installed HD, all I've got to do is go to system prefs>classic and direct it to the location of my OS9 System folder and I'm good to go. Wish me luck everyone!

This worked like a charm for me!

The only thing that was different is that my OS9 image was called Classic.dmg instead of OS9General.dmg.

Thanks!

Just did an erase and install of Tiger. Thanks to you dli537, I got classic installed through your tip about copying classic to cd and burn it and then copy it back to the Macintosh HD after Tiger installation.

It's all smooth sailing from here! Thanks dli537!

I'm curious. Can I copy the system folder from the Mac OS 9 install disc?

What dli537 spoke of is a way to extract the OS9/Classic System folder from the OSX Restore Discs. His second way was to copy the existing OS9?Classic System folder from your existing HD to a cd and burn it and then you copy it back to the HD after the Tiger Reinstall.

Maybe dli537 or anyone else could chime in.
