Mac rejecting commercial CDs?

I used to have an iBook G3 (w/ Jaguar). It rejected and spit out a couple of CDs after spinning them for a moment.

Then I bought an iBook G4 (w/ Panther). Didn't see the problem that I can remember. I recently upgraded to Tiger, and have had it reject several CDs already. (These CDs definitely worked before b/c I have ripped them to my iPod.)

Anyone else see this or know what the deal is? These are commercial CDs, not home burn jobs.

Music CDs or video CDs? If music, are they copy protected?

sometimes zapping PRAM will help with funky cd/dvd drives.

They are music CDs. Not copy protected, as far as I know; they're not recent CDs (The Soft Bulletin by Fmlaming Lips (1999)).

Sorry, but if this is happening with multiple CDs, your optical drive is on its way out.

There are a very few commercial CDs that don't work on Macs, but all of these are copy-protected. These are usually easy to spot if you know what you're looking for, because they don't have the traditional "Compact Disc" logo on the case (this is trademarked by Philips, and they refuse to allow copy-protected CDs to display that logo). If a CD displaying that logo has trouble, then it's possible that your drive may need to be cleaned.

Remember, kids: "Every time you listen to a copy-protected CD, Celine Dion kills an iMac. Please, think of the iMacs."
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

I remember I could never get my CD of Less Than Jake's "Losing Streak" album to play in my beige G3, despite the fact that it played fine in multiple other CD players. That would have been back in 98 or 99 that I had the problem, so I doubt it was a copy-protection issue.

I should dig it out to see if it will play in my G4, either because of OS X or a different drive. I would rather listen to "Soft Bulletin" these days, anyway.
