Here is a cool program that will disable Spotlight for those who don't want it running, like me.

Spotless

Ive noticed on ocassion slow downs here and there and I think it's been Spotlight indexing some new files and it's annoying, I could care less about searching for anything on my system as I keep it all organized anyway, and really don't need spotlight. The icon still exists on the menu bar but it defintly doesn't work, and you can still turn it back on if ever needed without any kind of real hastle.

But doesn't turning off Spotlight also disable searching in Mail?

Disable Spotlight? I think not.

You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Sure, disable Spotlight. If you don't want to search for anything, EVER!

Some people may love spotlight for it's searching, It's a function I personally don't need, not even for mail. But the beauty of it is you can turn it on and off without any real hastle. My system has actually been faster since turning it off and I've noticed alot less disk activity so it's doing what I need it to.

Um, no, let's not.

Placebo effect. Spotlight only accesses the disk during the initial indexing and when you write to files (i.e. creating, moving, copying, or saving them); it cannot impact your system performance in the way you've described.

Ditto.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

Tip: I changed spotlight key to command shift space bar

this allows me to set command space to quicksilver which i am really trying to learn by beyond launching stuff i have yet to. (maybe i am slow but quicksilver is just so hard to figure out.)

maybe i will go back to launch bar.

While my files and data are very well organized, I can't imagine giving up Spotlight. In the short time I have used it, I have found it to be the single most must have feature of Tiger. When going back to my laptop that had yet to be upgraded, it took me 15 minutes to find the exact document I was looking for as opposed to 1 minute to find something on Tiger.

The ability to search mail, pdf, and word files for a phrase is extremely powerful. If you don't do any real work with information in files, then I can see how you could not appreciate it. But anyone with a non-trivial amount of data and the need to access information quickly will find it to be a very handy and powerful tool.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

Yes, I second that. This is akin to the discussions we had that journaling slows down disk performance to a crawl.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
