Title says it all... as I type this post, the classic splash screen has been sat there for 5mins - just not budging at all

Don't use classic much, just for the odd app... you know?

Using 10.4.1 on my powerbook 1.5ghz. Have repaired os9 and all permissions but no joy. Rebuilt the os9 desktop (didn't think it would help, I'm just clutching at straws) - has anyone else had similar problems/ideas on how to fix?

Thank you in advance...

Try disabling extensions? (Wow, I haven't said that in a while.)

How about reinstalling Classic, then? (It's as simple as dragging the System Folder from another disk.)

i had this error and finally got it fixed after about 5 months of asking around.
2 main steps. Setting up the preferences for user and deleting old ones

Login As Admin
go to system preferences
Then classic. Stop classic if its running
Go to the Advanced Tab
Check the Use Mac OS 9 preferences from your home

Login As the user you want.
Now go to Your User folder and then Library

There is a folder called "Classic"
Delete it.

Now shoot the moon and start classic

it should be working now

Thank you for all your help so far... have done everything as instructed, but no... still no joy Am seriously thinking about doing a reinstall from the ground up and see if this does any better... even installing a new classic system folder did not help... But at least 10.4 runs smooth

try reseting the pram. hold down option-apple sign-p-r while switching on. release the keys once youve heard the startup chime the second time and i think the splash screen should have reset pram on it. hope that works.

BTW: good luck. it shouldnt be something too serious.

Does the mouse cursor change too a bomb? does it change to a spinning beach ball? it might be a hardware problem. though reseting the pram might fix that.

try unchecking the Use Mac OS 9 preferences from your home

this wont allow anyone but the admin to change settings in classic but it should work.

reason i got it was because my classic folder in my home was locked some how and it couldnt edit the prefs or read them. so i had to remove the old ones and new ones appeared and she was fine for me.

Damn... I've tried all of those now... installing classic from scratch, no joy... I am beginning to wonder if it is an issue with 10.4.1? It worked fine with 10.4 - the only way to be *100% sure* would be to do a fresh install of 10.4... mmmmm, I might well try that in a few - but no cursor turing into a bomb, no spinning beach ball... it just 'sits there' with the Mac OS 9.2.2 screensplash...

Wish me luck! LOL...

Thanks again for all your help...

Finally went ahead and did a clean install of 10.4 - now classic starts up fine... no matter what I did before, it just did not want to know... just glad I have a back up drive and superduper to make the whole recovery process so much easier!

Still don't know why it was hanging like that though... oh well
