Is there a way to selectively sleep drives? I'd like to sleep the hard drives after inactivity but leave the optical drives alone, which can take a good minute to wake up. If there's a hack for this I'd like to know about it. Thanks.

I don't think you can control optical drive spin down with anything at all, but you can exercise fine control over at least your startup drive using the Terminal utility "pmset," Type man pmset for more information, or you can look here.

There is also a utility included in CHUD called SpindownHD. It doesn't look like it provides the control you are asking for, but it at least lets you change the general settings and watch which drives are active or asleep.
