I bought an imac off ebay, and the guy isnt responding to my emails yet. I cannot log in, because I don't know the password, is there a way around it?

Reset it with a Mac OS X boot CD.

Is there a way to re-install X? I don't have the pass, so I can't boot up the disk...

You do not need a password to boot from the install disk. You just put it in the drive, and hold down the C key while rebooting.

You don't even have to reinstall... there should be a recover password menu item.

That's "Reset Password" -- there is no way to recover a password.
