You have to tell us what your machine is. Older Macs can't boot OS 9.

That machine can't boot to OS 9. It's too new. But whatever it is you want to do should be doable in Classic.

ok well what happened is my girlfriend unplugged my external hd without ejecting it. I have read in anouther forum where a guy booted in os 9 then used "Disk Repair (whatever it is called)" and fixed the problem.
Data Rescue X hasn't worked
neither has disk warrior.

Thank you for your help

So it won't mount at all in OS X? Actually you don't have to mount it. Just run disk Utility. If you see the disk in the left column you ought to be able to repair it, even if it's not mounted.

If you selected the disk, try selecting the volume, or vice versa.

You should probably find someone who CAN boot into OS 9, and get them to try and fix it for you. Most Apple shops should have an older machine (or two) around.

Good luck. I've had the same experience, and thankfully I've been able to boot into OS 9.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

well i'm here at work (off the clock) using their os9 machine. i plugged my hd into the computer and it is rebuilding the desktop for the external hd. Its been doing that for like 20 minuets now. The progress bar has been done since i plugged it in but it just keeps going.
is it supposed to take this long?

OS X has no desktop database, so that OS 9 is actually building a desktop database for the first time. If there are a lot of files on the disk it can take long. You could cancel that since you don't need a desktop database actually. On the other hand cancelling anything in OS 9 could lead to a crash or so, so it's your decision.

I would say it's a good sign because it means OS 9 sees something on the disk. With luck it can repair the disk or at least you will probably be able to retrieve the data from that disk using the OS 9 machine.

yeah everything shows up but when i run disk first aid my external hd doesn't show up in the list of things to fix.
I figured because i can see everyting there and run some files with no problem i could probably take it home and it would work. WRONG.

I don't know what to do because disk first aid doesn't see it.

i may have to just take everything and put it on my work's computer then format and put it back.
unfortunatly i don't have time for that.

any suggestions?

ok get this: it worked at my place of work. I take it home and it doesn't work.
so I bring it back to work and now on the same computer i was on just an hour ago it now says the disk is unreadable and wants to inatilize it.
I am freaking out man. This sucks!

Disk Warrior doesn't need the drive to be mounted.

Neither, for that matter, does Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities)
