I ended up disabling Spotlight altogether using Spotless. I never really search for things anyway, and this way I don't have random beachballs or mds and LAServer killing my CPU.

what do you think is causing it ?

too much data for the cpu to handle , or is it a disk corruption issue ??

??

I've seen a lot of people with say , 333mhz iMacs running Tiger on it complaining that Tiger sucks because it's slow on their computers.

I think the case is not that Spotlight isnt "Snappy", its that when you use it in the Finder its rubbishy as the second you start typing it starts searching and the finder dies stoopid finder...
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

I think the fact that it begins to search the instant you type a single letter has got to be adding to the perception of bogginess. I realize that this is how the filter works, but eliminating all the entries that start with the first letter, but don't contain the second if the first letter returns 1 or 2 million results has got to be pretty taxing on any system.

If Spotlight could be programmed to wait .5 secs after keystrokes stop to begin a search, or as suggested above, only after the return key was pressed, then this perception of lagginess would be eliminated.

I think it seems so much snappierâ„¢ in iTunes because no matter haw many songs you've got, it's still searching only a fraction of the data that a system-wide search has to churn through.

Chris, absolutely right. I have a dual 2gHz G5 and spotlight really lags with those first two or three keystrokes. Mind you, I have over 400gigs to search and some pretty bulky files. Panther did it MUCH faster and I am finding that STOPlight really doesn't search the documents I want it to.

Reason that your minimac is working fine with STOPlight? Most likey because you just don't have many files. It isn't a precessor issue people, it is a crap code issue.

With much love, iPhotoStuff

I can't believe it. I love Spotlight. It's one of the best things about Tiger, imo. And no problems or lagginess on a PB17 and Mac mini.

Go back to Panther because of one feature that can be regained through freeware? Suit yourself.

Uhh, let's see. I have about 6.78GB free on the 80GB hard drive. I also have it connected to a 160GB and a 120GB external hard drive.

So ... yeah, I have a few files.
