Resolved: We don't know what firmware will ultimately be running on Mactels, but we do know OpenFirmware is not going to be it.

Question: Is the link between device drivers and the underlying firmware abstracted by IOKit?

Second Question: Am I correct in presuming vendors will now have to code and support two different versions of their device drivers for their Mac and Mactel customers?

Drivers are largely related to the cpu and not the bios or fimrware.

Anyone else care to offer an opinion on this important matter?

To some degree, yes. Exactly how much is uncertain: some device drivers can get away with more than others. In many cases it depends on the type of device you're dealing with.

This is true. Most of the code in these drivers will be similar, but they won't be completely identical most of the time (if in fact they ever are).

Great. I guess we'll learn more about this soon enough. Could there be such a thing as a universal driver binary?
