I'm going to upgrade to Tiger soon and want to move my gmail emails to Mail to fully use the Spotlight feature. I have roughly 10 labeled folders in gmail. I was wondering if there is an easier way of importing email? The only way I can think of is to unlabel all of my mail and put it in the inbox. Then download roughly a few thousand messages, then resort. Any ideas? Thanks.

Create a rule to forward all gmail to Mail.app.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

That's a good idea, but won't that change the headers?

As I understand it all you need to do is turn on pop forwarding and then set up Mail. It will download all your gmail messages.

The gmail messages that you've labelled are not actually in folders (and their headers remain the same I think, they only appear to be altered), they're all still in the gmail archive. So to replicate that in Mail you can set up 'Smart Folders' that will behave just as those labels did. So yes, you'll have to resort but it shouldn't be that hard or take too long.

Pop is all you have to do. Go to the options on your main gmail page and it'll have directions. I do this and it works great.

If you already have your old messages in Mail.app, then just import them from Tiger. If you want to get mail off the gmail server into Mail.app, then you just need to use POP forwarding. As someone already mentioned, there are instructions on how to do it in your Gmail preferences and it works like a charm.
