I am having a major problem with OS X since I upgraded to Tiger... whenever I download any file in Safari the CPU spikes to between 80 - 115% of CPU usage and my system becomes unusable.

I have rest Safari and the problem still persists... can anyone help out?

In a single processor machine, you can't use more than 100% of your CPU. That said, depending on various factors, a download could conceivably take 100% of your CPU, but should make your machine 'unusable'.

It is possible even on a single-processor machine for top to report a process taking more than 100% CPU. I've seen it before on my iMac 400. It seems to be some kind of oddness with the sampling interval.

No idea why a download would do that, though. It's pretty peculiar.

This has happened to me on every machine I've ever used since Safari was released. Doing any kind of large download in the background takes all the CPU time and does slow down other things.

yes, downloads, i've noticed will make movie playback choppy on my iBook.

Mind you, doing ANYTHING else will make movie playback choppy.
