Weird OS Language?

Hi All,

Upgraded my system to Tiger, and am very pleased. However, certain programs have some sort of gibberish character rendering. Other programs are unaffected. Here is the panic.com website in Safari:

Weird, eh? Unison is affected, Safari, and a few others. The same page when viewed in Firefox looks fine. I've looked at the language panels and the OS is registering as America and English. Any clues?

Thanks,
- Moo!

Perhaps a corrupt font? Maybe you could check whatever font those programs use (I guess something like Arial or Helvetica). You can validate the fonts in Font Book I think.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried just as you said, and no problems came up.

The most puzzling part is that some websites appear just fine, and all those same websites appear just fine in Firefox. However, most Apple applications are affected; including Safari, iChat, Addres Book and others.

Has this happened to anyone else?

That definitely looks like a corrupt font. Do you have any themes installed? I've heard of those causing similar problems.

Thanks for your posts! You are right, it is something font related. While I was checking my Fontbook for bad fonts, the ones not showing up were the ones enabled in Suitcase.

I have quit Suitcase and all is well in the land of Apple apps! Thanks so much to monkeybrain and Chuckit for your awesome help!

For future reference, your problem was caused the presence of a non-standard font with a common name like Helvetica or Times that replaces Latin by Cyrillic characters. Removal is the usual cure.
