Decided to try filevault out (I've always just used an encrypted disk image if I needed to secure files). I decided to try it out on my Mac mini. All seemed to go well but now when I try to turn it off, I get an error message saying the copying couldn't take place.
I moved my music folder to my external HD so space shouldn't be a problem.
Any ideas?

This happened here under 10.4 (which had a bug with sparseimages >1 GB). It worked, however, when I tried it again under 10.4.1.

Hmm, it seems that it was the Sparse image problem after all. It was showing as 74+GB, basically the entire hard drive. I tried compressing it via Terminal but that failed. I've ended up creating a new user and migrating stuff from my external drive and backups to the new user.
It's not that bad as I kept my PB safe since I have my work stuff on it, just an inconvenience.

Argh. I don't trust SPARSE images at all.

Yea, I don't feel very much at ease with my home folder in an invisibly-mounted sparse image, and would much prefer for Apple to implement an encrypted file system for 10.5... although I have to say that I've only lost data to a crash once.

I tried to turn FileVault on my 12" Rev B PB yesterday and it told me that it could not be done because I did not have enough free space. It told me that I required 400ish GB of space to turn on FileVault....all the while I only have about 60GB of data on the PB???
Hmmmmm??? I'm lost!
