Is muting the microphone impossible?

Am I missing something, or is OS X missing an option to mute a microphone input...
In sound preferences I can lower it all the way down, but it's not actually muted at that point.

I think you are right, you can only lower it down but not disable it from the options menu.
However, I think that setting it to the lowest level is basically the same as muting.
I would not be surprised if there is an option in one of the configuration files to actually mute (probably remove) the microphone input, but you would have to search a bit to find it.

I'm not sure this is entirely an OS issue, but is perhaps related to the hardware, e.g, a DP 800/G4 (OS 10.4.1) does not have an internal microphone and thus no native sound input.
What other machines came without an input source, I dunno.
OTOH, since you have a native sound input source, an input mute would be nice.
Still, I wish I had this problem...

I use a Logitech 350 USB mic and headset for gaming, it has a little button in-line that mutes the mic and can adjust the volume with it as well.

Lowering it all the was wasn't quite enough to kill a feedback problem that was encountered with an eMac. The internal mic has no way to be completly turned off.
Seems really odd not to have a mute option on it, as I'm sure the sound hardware supports it, the OS is simply not exposing such an option.

If it's a feedback problem, maybe you should turn off pass-through on the microphone. Go to Audio Midi Setup in the Utilities folder, and uncheck Thru in the Audio Input section.
Alternatively, you could just set your audio input to Line In. IIRC that completely disables the microphone.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

I'll try relaying those things to the friend I was helping with the problem. Odd the midi setup exposes options Apple doesn't put in the main sound preferences.
