Hey everybody,

eMac 1.25Ghz SuperDrive here with 10.4.1. Never had a problem with it until earlier tonight

1) Press the Power Button as usual to boot up the eMac;
2) Hear the startup chime, then see the normal grey screen with black Apple logo;
3) After maybe 10 seconds of the grey/Apple logo screen, the screen goes all black with the following line at top left: localhost //root#

Why won't the OS X GUI load up normally? I've booted off the Tiger Install DVD and verified the disk with Disk Utility: no problems found. Used /sbin/fsck -f from my command line thingy mentionned in point 3) above: no problems found.

I'm now booted from my external FW drive running 10.3.9 and can see my main eMac drive just fine. All the system files and normal folders are present. I can't run Applejack either from my command line thingy in point 3) because it can't be found (or so it tells me).

What's the command to start up OS X? Like in Linux where you can type startx to fire up the GUI?

What else can I do?

Have you tried typing "login"? I have logged into my mac using the console mode, but it never looked the way you described. An archive and install may be the easiest way around this...
