What's a winmail.dat file and how do I open it?

My wife received an email with a winmail.dat attachment. What is it and how does she open it? She knows the sender and was expecting an attachment so I don't think it is a virus.

Specific Notes
When an end user sends mail to the Internet from an Exchange Windows or Outlook client, a file attachment called WINMAIL.DAT may be automatically added to the end of the message if the recipient's client cannot receive messages in Rich Text Format (RTF). The WINMAIL.DAT file contains Exchange Server RTF information for the message, and may appear to the recipient as a binary file. A program called WMDecode can be used to recover any attachments from the WINMAIL.DAT file.
She'll need a PC to open it.

My wife is using Mail which should be able to handle RTF. Seems a little odd...

No. Look on versiontracker for a program called "TNEF's Enough".

Got it. I tried that program and it couldn't open it either. Ah well, my wife resorted to using the telephone

Its a M$ thing - the person that sent the message was using Outlook and encoded it in RTF. Of course, RTF in M$ world is not normal Rich Text Format. Insteads its M$ own version. She'll need Outlook (PC) to read the message or contact the person that sent it and tell not to encode the message with M$RTF.
Last time I saw this, some smuck 'Exchange Server Admin' checked the box on the Exchange server to encode all outgoing/incoming message as M$RTF because he thought it was a good idea. Not a problem if everyone your sending to is using Outlook - but that's not usually the case. Anyway, we removed the option and all was well again. . .
