Hi all. I'm new to OS X, and I have a question that's probably simple to answer. I'm used to downloading files with windows. When the download window appears, it usually asks to which folder you would like to download the file, and you can choose virtually any folder on your computer. With OS X, my options seem to be limited to the folders in the Finder Sidebar. Can someone please tell me how to download items to folders within any of the sidebar folders? For instance, Home>Documents>Recipes>Beer> or whatever....
Thanks

You can make a folder where your downloads are put, and then drag that folder into the sidebar. It's kinda like a shortcut.

Simple.
Open Safari Preferences.
Change "Save downloaded files to:" whatever you desire.

Hold down option and rick-click (control-click) the link. Save anywhere.

Well, thanks for the help. But it's not quite the same. rick-clicking still only offers sidebar items + a couple of recently used folders. Changing preferences in safari forces me to save in SAME designated folder until I go back and change it, which isn't really what I'm after. Using the shortcut method is kinda like just saving to desktop and then moving to proper folder each time. I appreciate the help, but none of them really meets my needs. I get a lot of attachments in email, and I like diverting them to their appropriate folder right away (sometimes a folder within a folder within a flash drive) so that I can look at them after I've read through all messages. I guess I'll just download to desktop (or download folder or whatever) and then sort when I'm finished. Thanks again...

uh, if you option-right-click on an download item you can save to *anywhere* you like - not just sidebar and recent items....perhaps you just were not looking closely enough in the finder window that comes up when you tried this?

You have to click the triangle to expand the window, so you can see your whole directory structure.

You could make some automator plugins... so you can easily move the files to the desired folders, just an idea...
